Alexandros Simopoulos is a multi-disciplinary artist from Athens, Greece (born 1990). He studied International relations and Humanitarian Law in Panteion University in Athens, School of International Studies, Communication and Culture, participated in the viewers program, Athens School of Fine Arts and received an MA in Visual Arts and Illustration from Camberwell College of Arts with a scholarship from the University of the Arts London. He has worked with NGOs, galleries, museums and cultural institutions internationally. He has been on the forefront of the Greek urban art scene and exhibited solo in institutions and galleries in the US, Athens, London and Malta (Santa Fe Art Institute, Esplora Museum Malta, Valletta18 European Capital of Culture) and participated in group shows internationally (Museum CID Grand Hornu, MUDAC Museum Lausanne, Onassis Cultural Centre Athens, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, Nuuk Museum Greenland, Besiktas International Festival Istanbul, Human Impacts Institute New York, Susak Biennale Croatia). He has created public murals internationally, from Spain and Germany, to Greenland and India. He has received the Fulbright Artist Residency Award/ Fulbright Fellowship, 1st Artworks/ Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship, Berliner Leben Stiftung Scholarship, European Cultural Foundation Grant and the IKY Greek State Scholarship. His work has been published on international publications such as the International New York Times and Le Monde among others.His work is based on a visual language that uses oral tradition, folk art, the naive and the humorous as key-points to discuss the human condition and reflect the current social and political context. Initiating from a practice that was rooted in graffiti and being an active muralist for years, a big interest of his is working on aspects of the public and urban space. Travelling and exploring new localities is key for the evolution of his work. He is also interested in community engagement and participatory methodologies.
