INSPIRATION
The Virgins is inspired by The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola’s 1999 film
about five doomed sisters and their brief lives in a suburban Michigan town. The film
was based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Jeffery Eugenides. As a
fragrance, The Virgin perfectly captures the drowsy pacing of the film and the soft,
powdery notes transport us right back to the 1970s. The Virgin opens with a burst of
aldehydes, muguet and violet, followed closely by the warm powdery heart of orris
and rose. Perfumer Mark Buxton employs an interesting trick and uses geranium oil to
keep the warm powdery notes from becoming overly sweet. This also has the curious
effect of creating distance between the wearer and the fragrance—whereas aldehydic
florals typically have an enveloping quality, The Virgin always feels just out of reach.
The fragrance rests on a woody-resinous base with dominant notes of tonka bean,
cedar, incense and sandalwood. Unlike some fragrances in this style, The Virgin
never feels crowded—rather there is a haunting sense of emptiness that further ties
the composition to the film. The Virgin is a perfectly-executed fragrance that captures
the mood of Coppola’s film and is one of Buxton’s finest creations.
